The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) hosted the 2025 National Textile Convention (TELACon) at the Philippine International Convention Center on January 30-31, emphasizing circularity in textile production. The event, themed “Weaving Circularity,” gathered designers, manufacturers, policymakers, and environmental advocates to explore sustainable, regenerative textile practices.
DOST-PTRI Director Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr. underscored the convention’s goal: “By weaving circularity into every aspect of textile production, we aim to create a more responsible and sustainable future.” Discussions focused on life-cycle assessments, upcycling, and policy integration, with speakers from the United Nations Development Programme, NEDA, and the Department of Finance.
A highlight of the second day was the partnership between Cebu Pacific and DOST-PTRI to promote Philippine textiles. Cebu Pacific Manager Patricia Bucag-Tan explained that the airline initiated discussions to validate the authenticity of weaves created by local artisans. “This collaboration ensures that the textiles used in Cebu Pacific’s initiatives are both culturally significant and ethically sourced,” she said.
The initiative incorporates locally woven fabrics into Cebu Pacific’s corporate and brand touchpoints, allowing passengers and stakeholders to appreciate indigenous craftsmanship. Bucag-Tan emphasized that the partnership aims to sustain weaving communities by providing them with a wider platform. “Beyond showcasing these fabrics, we want to create more opportunities for collaboration with other weaving communities and further promote Philippine heritage and culture,” she added.
As part of this effort, Cebu Pacific launched QR Flight Codes, allowing travelers to explore the Philippines "Juan by Juan" through interactive digital content. The airline also worked closely with DOST-PTRI to select textiles that best represent different regions while aligning with Cebu Pacific’s network. “This is just the beginning. We are committed to supporting Philippine tourism and aviation while serving as a platform for weaving communities to promote their craft,” Bucag-Tan said, hinting at future initiatives.
Other key developments at TELACon included the launch of the Halal Textile Science and Technology Program and partnerships advancing bamboo textile research. The event concluded with the KatHABI Fashion Innovation Show, featuring government-appropriate uniforms made from Philippine Tropical Fabrics, reinforcing RA 9242’s mandate for their use in government apparel.
TELACon 2025 reaffirmed the Philippines’ commitment to sustainable textile innovation, positioning the industry toward a circular economy that balances environmental responsibility with economic growth.
