Agri, infra damage due to Paeng now at P11 billion

Damage to the country’s agriculture sector and infrastructure continues to rise more than a week since Severe Tropical Storm Paeng left the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the latest government tally showed.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Thursday morning reported that it logged P6.19 billion damage to agriculture sector, affecting 144,682 farmers and fisherfolk and affecting 134,651.205 hectares of crop area.

Damage to infrastructure due to the destructive storm meanwhile is pegged at P5.055 billion. The NDRRMC said 910 infrastructures across 13 regions were damaged by Paeng.

The storm also damaged a total of 53,096 houses, of which 47,988 are partially wrecked while 5,108 were totally destroyed by Paeng.

According to the NDRRMC, a total of 1,347,387 families or 5,404,573 persons were affected.  Of these, 10,233 families or 45,805 persons are staying inside 203 evacuation centers while 215,619 families or 1,071,204 persons are being served outside these facilities.

Casualty count in the latest NDRRMC report showed 159 dead, 146 injured and 30 persons reported as missing.

So far, a total of 523 cities or municipalities across the country have declared a State of Calamity, triggering a prize freeze on basic commodities in these localities.

As of November 10, the government has released P276 million worth of assistance in the form of family food pack, hygiene kits, sleeping kits and others to the millions affected by the storm.
