Former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chief Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr., who has extensive experience in local politics, said that he is ready to lead the Interior Department under the incoming administration of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.

Vic Rodriguez, the spokesperson of Marcos Jr., announced on Friday that Abalos had accepted the position of secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government. This agency supervises all the local government units in the country.

“At this time when there is a strong call for our nation’s unity, the DILG will play a paramount role in promoting peace and order and in bringing together our local government units,” said Abalos.

“Rest assured that I will do my utmost to foster thriving, peaceful communities throughout our beloved country,” he added.

Abalos previously served as the chairman of the MMDA under the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, replacing the late Danilo Lim, who died in January 2021. Abalos resigned as the MMDA chief last February to serve as the national campaign manager of  Marcos Jr.

“I am extremely grateful to President Duterte for the trust and confidence in me to lead NCR during the most crucial time of the pandemic and for giving me the opportunity to serve.”

Abalos is a household name in local politics as he served as the mayor of Mandaluyong City for 15 years from 1998-2004 and 2007-2016. He was the city’s congressman from 2004-2007. He began his career as councilor from 1995 to 1998.

Abalos served as the President of the Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines and League of Cities of the Philippines from 2007-to 2010 and as Executive Vice President of the National Movement of Young Legislators and Metro Manila Councilors’ League.

As Interior Secretary, Abalos will advise the chief executive on promulgating policies, rules, regulations, and other issuances over local governments and oversee public order and safety.
