After choosing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio as Education Secretary, the campaign manager of the Uniteam, and former Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairperson Benhur Abalos will serve as the next Interior and Local Government Secretary of the incoming Marcos administration.
In a press briefing, Marcos’ spokesperson, Attorney Vic Rodriguez, announced when asked to name additional members of the Marcos cabinet after an alleged list of possible members of the administration circulated on social media.
“I would also like to announce that chairman Benhur Abalos has been nominated to lead the Department of the Interior (and Local Government) and he has accepted the challenge to lead the Department of the Interior and Local Government,” Rodriguez said.
Abalos served as the campaign manager of Marcos.
“‘Yung kumakalat sa (Those circulating in) social media, there’s no truth to that apparent list. Walang listahan, (There is no list) the only two names we have announced by far is that of Vice President-elect Inday Sara Duterte for the Department of Education and just now, I am announcing the nomination of chairman Benhur Abalos to lead the Department of the Interior and Local Government,” he said.
He noted that they are looking for Cabinet members who are competent to serve the public, love the country, respect the Constitution, and are not involved in any plans to overthrow the government.
Duterte-Carpio was the first to be announced as a member of the Marcos cabinet. She said she was a mother who wanted her children to be “well-trained and well-educated.”
“We’re in the process of searching and looking up for possible nominees for different Cabinet positions. I don’t think anyone should expect that it can be announced in one sitting because as you know the vetting process takes time and appointing and nominating someone, it’s not a one-way thing, it has to be accepted and it has to be offered,” he said.
On the other hand, the Marcos transition team will be led by Rodriguez, together with former lawmakers Anton Lagdameo and Naida Angping and South Cotabato Governor Jun Tamayo.
