Now that we are celebrating International Women’s Month—let’s talk about one powerful woman: Madonna.
Madonna fans or “Rebel Hearts” couldn’t believe that they were already at the time of the age when film studios were planning to create a biopic film about Madonna. We all know her—a blondie, a singer, an icon, sleek eyebrows, sweet voice, a pop legend, name it; she’s an epitome of an empowered woman who made a mark for herself during her time up until this day. After all, if there’s one woman who deserves the next biopic, it is Madonna—an artist who inspired plenty of modern pop singers.
There were biographical films about various icons like Freddy Mercury, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Elton John. But a biopic about Madonna sounds a little bit weird, considering it’s a little early for that. We are still hearing ‘Material Girl’ and ‘Like a Virgin’ everywhere, but just in case you didn’t know, both songs were released in 1984. Feel old yet?
There is no doubt that she is pop music’s enormous icon, and if there is a role that young actresses would die to play, Madonna is probably at the top of the list. Casting director Carmen Cuba recently inaugurated a search for a Material Girl role, with a list of actresses who tried their luck. Julia Garner and Florence Pugh auditioned and are still in the running. Alexa Demie, Odessa Young, Emma Laird, Sky Ferreira, and Bebe Rexha also auditioned but didn’t make it—they are all deserving, by the way.
The star is also looking for an actress to play her in a film about her early life. She expressed that she wants to show her incredible journey as an artist, musician, dancer, and human being, trying to make her way in this world.
“The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going, and art has kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories, and who better to tell them than me. It’s essential to share the rollercoaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.” Madonna stated.
Madonna has always represented women in general. She decided to produce her biopic because a lot attempted to write movies about her, but they were always men. She ended mansplaining in one interview.
Playing the role looks challenging. You have to be good at dancing, singing, at almost anything. You have to embody Madonna as a whole: her fashion sense, her power, her innovation, and even her craziest sides and her stand as a woman.
Madonna rose to fame when sexism and misogyny were hugely triumphant. Women in the industry always had to prove themselves, that they can do what a man can do, and that they are more than just a pretty face—that they are not just women—that they are WOMEN.
Madonna lent her voice through her image in a culture where women were objectified and criticized. She sang about the pleasure of sex and wore a controversial wedding dress in her song ‘Like a Virgin.’
She made the people look at nudity from another standpoint. She reinvented pop and was a master of continual transformation thanks to her ability to transform herself for albums, videos, photoshoots, tours, and movies. She also fought for the rights of older women. We still see her sticking around, even with critics around her, saying she’s too old to be relevant. But she still is.
There are plenty of factors on how Madonna reinvented and changed pop culture. She made gap-tooth cool, made underwear as a fashion statement, brought abortion to light, and there are just too many to mention. Madonna also brought vogue to the ballroom scene. She is an inspiration to the LGBT community. Madonna stood up against AIDS when the President couldn’t. The pop singer also denounced homophobia multiple times.
For any actress, playing Madonna is a dream role. And with Madonna as the subject, it will be one crazy journey to embark on.
While the biopic is still in the works, it has yet to receive approval from the studio. So who will play Madonna is not a question, as long as Madonna chose it. She is the only person who can pull off the whole process of the film. Madonna undoubtedly changed the pop music scene forever, and we cannot wait to learn more about her as soon as the biopic releases.
