Vice President Leni Robredo on Sunday joined the growing call urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to extend the deadline of voter registration for the 2022 elections.
Robredo said the voter registration should be extended by one month, citing the “extraordinary circumstances” brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Filipinos have until September 30 to register for the 2022 elections.
“Naiintindihan natin ‘yung Comelec kasi digitized ‘yung election, kailangan talagang gumalaw na sila, kailangan talagang ayusin na nila lahat so kailangan maglagay ng deadline,” Robredo said in her weekly radio show on DZXL.
“Pero baka naman puwede possible na i-delay pa siya for another month para lang siguradong makahabol ‘yung mga hindi pa nakakarehistro,” she added.
Last week, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) said that extending voter registration “would encourage people to register and would enable them to fully exercise their constitutionally-recognized fundamental right to suffrage and political participation.”
Comelec earlier said it would not extend voter registration due to time constraints despite calls from lawmakers.
But the poll body decided to extend voter registration hours and open registration sites in shopping malls.
