For more than two decades, the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival has served as a home for stories that challenge conventions, spark conversations, and capture the many realities of Filipino life. This year, the country's premier independent film festival returns with an invitation to look inward as Cinemalaya 22: Reel Reflections takes center stage from August 6 to 18.

Built around the idea of cinema as a mirror, this year's festival explores the experiences, aspirations, struggles, and triumphs that shape the Filipino identity. Through independent films grounded in authenticity and artistic vision, Cinemalaya encourages audiences not only to watch compelling stories unfold on screen, but also to recognize pieces of themselves in every narrative.

Competing for this year's coveted Balanghai Trophy are nine full-length films: A.ni.mál by Dustin Celestino; 2 VALID IDs by Ma-an Asuncion-Dagñalan and Abet Pagdagdagan Raz; GANGGANG by JL Burgos; HAND OF GOD by Mark Duane Angos; MAG-IINA by Giancarlo Abrahan and Guelan Luarca; KAKA SA YAWAN by Alpha Habon; STATUS: REJECTED by Vahn Leinard Pascual; TAYO LANG ANG NAKAKAALAM by David Corpuz; and TIRIK by May-i Guia Padilla.

The festival also shines a spotlight on emerging storytellers through 10 short film finalists: ELENITA ELENA ELAINE by Gabriela Serrano; HONEY, MY LOVE, SO SWEET by JT Trinidad; HOY, HOY, INGAT! by Norvin de los Santos; kung paano kakalas. by Joseph Vitali; PARA-PARAAN by Mae Chan Li; RUNO! by Lysa Catolico and Jazmine Gin Pateña; SILKSCREEN by Rey Anthony Villaverde; SORBETES by Jennissie Gilbuena; THE KEEPER by Nolan Rae Fabular and TRNZ; and THE RIVER FLOWS IN DIFFERENT PLACES by Lot-lot Hermosura. Together, the competing entries examine themes of identity, family, memory, justice, resilience, love, and the complexities of contemporary life.

Presented by the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc., the festival will primarily be held at Red Carpet Cinemas at Shangri-La Plaza, with Ayala Malls and Gateway Cineplex once again serving as partner venues. The expanded lineup of screening locations allows more moviegoers to experience the diversity and creativity of contemporary Philippine independent cinema.

Running alongside the festival is the 38th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video, Southeast Asia's longest-running independent film competition. Featuring entries in the Short Feature/Narrative, Experimental, Documentary, and Animation categories, the competition continues to provide a platform for emerging filmmakers to explore bold ideas and alternative forms of storytelling.

Since its launch in 2005, Cinemalaya has supported the production and exhibition of Filipino independent films, helping introduce works that have earned acclaim both locally and internationally.
