Death toll due to Paeng climbs to 121

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Wednesday reported that the death toll due to Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) has climbed to 121.

 

Of these, 92 reported deaths have been confirmed while 29 are still for validation, the disaster preparedness agency said.

 

The NDRRMC also said they logged 103 persons hurt due to Paeng while authorities are looking for 36 reported missing individuals.

 

The affected population due to the powerful storm has also ballooned to more than 3.1 million people or 927,822 families across the country. Some 49,698 families still seek temporary shelter in 2,904 evacuation centers, while 277,825 families opted to stay with their friends and relatives.

 

Paeng has also damaged 11,294 houses across 15 regions. Of these, 9,190 were partially wrecked, while 2,104 were logged as totally destroyed by the storm.

 

The NDRRMC also said Paeng affected 54,139 farmers or fisherfolk and a total of 56,936 affected crop area, with an estimated value of damage wrought in agriculture worth P1.279 billion.

 

Meanwhile, Paeng’s damage to infrastructure is pegged at P896 million.

 

The NDRRMC said that as of Wednesday, the government had given P71.59 million worth of assistance to affected communities.
