Converge weathers SMB, gets streak going

Converge showed steely nerves in the end game on Friday night to upset shorthanded San Miguel Beer, 106-102, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The FiberXers coughed up a 17-point lead and then found themselves at the backseat in the final frame, but applied some timely tweaks to avert disaster and rise to 3-2 in the conference.

Import Quincy Miller delivered was a force on both ends, delivering 24 points, 16 rebounds that went with nine blocks. 

Aljun Melecio, meanwhile, led the locals with 18 points and seven assists as Converge pounced on the Beermen which are trying to integrate new import Devon Scott and still adjusting to the absence of recovering June Mar Fajardo.

Veteran guard Maverick Ahanmisi dealt the finishing kick in the late fightback to cap a 10-point, seven-rebound job.

Jeron Teng chipped in 13 off the bench while Mike DiGregorio 12,  came through for rookie PBA coach Aldin Ayo, whom he talked to regarding playing minutes ahead of the clash.  

CJ Perez led the way for the vaunted Beermen with 29 points. Mo Tautuaa added 21 more in the effort which wasn’t exactly enough as the club slid to 1-3.

Scott, who came in as a replacement for Diamond Stone, still turned in very decent numbers of 16 points, 15 rebounds, 6 assists, and 2 blocks in the defeat.
