The University of the Philippines is on a roll this UAAP Season 85 Men's Basketball Tournament, but the injuries in their team are giving them a sense of unease.

Head coach Goldwin Monteverde gave an injury update on big man Carl Tamayo, as he injured his right ankle with less than a minute remaining in their game against the University of the East.

Fortunately, the 6-foot-7 Gilas standout walked it off, and he only sustained a minor sprained ankle.

"Sabi naman sa akin nung PT namin, minor lang naman. Hindi naman grabe yung sprain so I guess he’s gonna be okay,” he said.

Tamayo finished the game 13 points, seven rebounds, and four steals in Fighting Maroon's 84-77 victory over UE.

However, veteran guard JD Cagulungan sat out Wednesday's game after making his return against Ateneo.

Monteverde said that Cagulangan is still nursing a strained hamstring, but he should be back in no time.

"Kasi nung last game, medyo na-strain ng kaunti yung hamstring. Pero ano naman siya recovering and I think by next game makakabalik na siya,” he shared.

Although the Maroons have been relying on their balanced attack, Monteverde could only hope that the return of Tamayo and Cagulangan will solidify their title-retention bid.

"Siguro nandun kami sa process of it, pero yung full potential namin… Siguro for me, wala pa kami dun. And we’re really working hard on that,” said the two-time UAAP juniors champion coach.

“One thing we need to address is maging consistent kami. Nakikita ko naman na we could really execute offensively and we could really good in defense. Yun lang, sana magawa namin in a consistent basis.”
