Blackwater clawed its way from 15 points down on Wednesday night to stun mighty San Miguel Beer, 109-106, in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.
Mike Ayonayon and Baser Amer joined hands in a frantic fourth-quarter run to help the Bossing prevail over the Beermen for the first time in 2018.
San Miguel, which was making its conference debut, was nurturing a 106-104 edge inside the final two minutes before Amer’s go-ahead triple, followed by Ayonayon’s steal that culminated in a layup that came with a foul.
“I told my players in the huddle, this was the best time to beat San Miguel,” head coach Ariel Vanguardia said.
San Miguel led 106-104 with less than two minutes left before Amer grabbed an offensive rebound and drained a three-pointer that went with a foul.
Amer muffed a freebie but Ayonayon made a crucial steal off a CJ Perez error that sealed the final tally.
Import Cameron Krutwig led the way for Blackwater with a triple-double of 20 points, 18 rebounds, 10 assists, and 2 blocks while Amer fired 16 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
Ayonayon, for his part, finished with 10 in the scoring effort as the club improved to 2-2.
Later that night, Magnolia also took down Philippine Cup runner-up TNT, 94-92.
