A Filipino teacher made the Philippines proud after he won a teaching award in New York City, where he currently teaches.
Dr. Eleuterio "Ely" Timbol, Jr., a 24-year teaching veteran, was one of 54 New York State public school teachers given the Governor's Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award in June.
The award went to Timbol, who teaches in District 28, New York City, for "inspiring thousands of children across our great state" and for "selflessly showing up for the kids."
With his win, Timbol got a $5,000 stipend to be used to develop his professional knowledge and skills.
Timbol dedicated his award to his late mother and brother.
"I feel this award will make them happy in heaven," Timbol said.
"My family way back home in the Philippines is full of excitement upon hearing this recognition. I have two sisters and seven brothers, and I can hear the sounds of loud excitement when they heard the news," Timbol added.
Winning an award for teaching is not new for Timbol.
In 2015, the Laguna province raised Filipino also won America's Finest Teacher Award by the Association of Filipino Teachers in America.
The following year, Timbol, who was born in Romblon, also got the Saint Michael's Outstanding Alumnus.
