The Philippine National Police (PNP) demanded a public apology from actor Mark Manicad for allegedly posting a photo of himself in police uniform while endorsing a presidential candidate.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 23, the PNP stressed that it has nothing to do with the post since it has always maintained an apolitical stand.
Manicad appeared in the popular television series Ang Probinsyano, the reason why he has a police uniform. It is not immediately clear, however, if it was indeed Manicad who posted the photo.
The PNP said they learned of the post after it went viral in the social media wherein Manicad, in police uniform, was shown in photo saluting with a text content that expresses support to a presidential candidate.
"We take offense in this unwarranted misrepresentation of the police organization for purposes of political mileage and propaganda. It is certainly most unfair and uncalled for, especially that it may confuse the general public. The PNP maintains a non-partisan stance and will never endorse any political party or candidate vying for any elective position," the statement read.
"We demand the owner of the concerned Facebook page to immediately TAKE DOWN this picture and issue a public apology without prejudice to any legal action that the PNP may take," it added.
The PNP also warned the public and even its personnel not to do the same.
"May this also serve as a stern warning to those who have the intention to malign the reputation of the PNP organization at the height of the election season. Rest assured that this incident won’t pass without holding those responsible accountable to their action," the statement read.
