It’s happening in 2024. The Lord of the Rings franchise already released a comeback date to the big screen.

The Animation and New Lines anime stand-alone The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will premiere on April 12, 2024. This was first announced in June 2021.

According to THR, the story is set behind Helm’s Deep’s fortress. It dates “hundreds of years before filmmaker Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, which included a lengthy battle sequence taking place at the fortress.”

The anime film will also explore the blood-soaked era of the mighty king of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand.

Kenji Kamiyama is directing the anime film while Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou will do the script based on a story by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the duo famous for Netflix’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.

Two decades ago, the first film Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, was released.

The third film, Return of the King, won the best picture, just one of 17 Oscars the franchise took home. All three films earned a total of $2.9 billion upon initial release.
