Following the conclusion of the Coordinated Patrol Philippines-Indonesia (CORPAT PHIL-INDO) XXXVI-2022 at the SMX Convention Center in Lanang, Davao City, the Philippine Border Committee (PHBC) and Indonesian Border Committee (IDBC) plan to conduct more frequent sea border patrols next year.
The strengthening of border patrols is one of the 12 points on the agenda that Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) and PHBC Chairman Lieutenant General Greg T. Almerol, as well as Rear Admiral Dr. TSNB Hutabarat MMS, Commander of the Indonesian Navy's 2nd Fleet Command and Chairman of the IDBC, have proposed to their respective governments.
"Expect that we will increase the frequency of conducting patrols to once a month to do our part, especially in cases of shipwreck due to calamities and typhoons, and to address the concerns of our fishermen who are in those areas," Almerol said.
A combined patrol between the Philippine Navy and the Indonesian Navy called CORPAT PHIL-INDO seeks to improve interoperability and protect both nations' maritime boundaries from piracy, illegal immigration, and other criminal activity. It is conducted four times a year through Harbor and Sea Phases.
This year's CORPAT series kicked off on March 28–30. The Second Leg, which had its opening ceremony in Manado City, Indonesia, took place on July 5–11, the Third Leg during the last week of October, and the Fourth Leg, which had its closing ceremony in Davao City on December 11–16.
The BRP Artemio Ricarte PS-37 from the Philippine Navy and the KRI HUI-634 from the Indonesian Navy participated in the Fourth Leg's Sea Phase, which took place from December 11 to 13.
They completed several Maritime Security Patrols and Exercises with a total steaming time of 47 hours and 51 minutes, covering 515.2 nautical miles.
The docking of KRI HUI-634 and its crew here during the Harbor Phase, which took place on December 13–14, was done in a pre-pandemic manner; courtesy call of RAdm. LtGen. Hutabarat with his Indonesian representative Almerol at EastMinCom's headquarters and an EastMinCom-hosted closing ceremony and fellowship dinner at the SMX Convention Center.
Almerol gave RAdm as well. During their visit, Hutabarat and his delegates received the customary welcome honors.
The CORPAT's notable accomplishments this year are the July 11 repatriation of 14 Filipinos from Indonesia to their families and the November 22 return to the Philippines of seven Filipino fishermen whose boat capsized close to the Philippines-Indonesia border and required rescue by a Japanese ship.
The closing ceremony included RAdm. Hutabarat thanked the Philippines-Indonesia Border Committee members for their professionalism and collaboration in making the CORPAT PHIL-INDO XXXVI-2022 a success.
