Gilas fends off pesky Saudi Arabia

Gilas Pilipinas pulled off a 76-63 win over Saudi Arabia in the fifth window of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian Qualifiers 2023 on Sunday night (Monday morning, Manila time).at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Philippines completed a sweep in the fifth window after scoring a significant victory against Jordan.

Unlike their 84-46 rout over the same team last August 29 in Pasay behind Utah Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson, Gilas had to work every possession to secure the victory.

From a 20-all score late in the second quarter, Philippines got buckets from Dwight Ramos, Kai Sotto, Bobby Ray Parks Jr., and Roger Pogoy to gain a 28-25 lead before a Ramos three-pointer ended the first half with a 31-25 advantage.

Pogoy suddenly exploded by scoring 11 of his 13 points, giving Gilas a 50-34 lead midway through the third frame.

Saudi Arabia continued to bring the fight against Gilas by cutting the lead down to eight, 69-61, with under two minutes left in the game.

However, fee throws by Thompson and Sotto and a drive-by Ramos secured the win for the Philippines.

Ramos and Pogoy led Gilas with 13 points apiece, while CJ Perez scored 10 points off the bench.

Sotto tallied 10 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks, while Thompson added nine points, nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Gilas improved to 5-3, while Saudi Arabia dropped to 2-6.

Mathna Almarwani led Saudi with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Khalid Abdel Gabar added 16 points, five rebounds, and five assists.
