Immigration bureau beefs up manpower at NAIA

The Bureau of Immigration said on Friday that they deployed 99 new immigration officers to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to beef up the manpower at the country’s premiere port.

In a statement, BI Port Operations chief Carlos Capulong said the new immigration officers started reporting at the NAIA last week and are undergoing training prior to their full deployment.

In a report to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente, Capulong also said that the new batch of immigration inspectors will be rotated in their shift assignments every week “so they can experience the challenges and grasp the enormity of their roles and responsibilities as border control officers of our country.”

Capulong also explained that the BI is preparing early for the eventuality of the country’s reopening of borders and increase in international travel.

He said: “We believe that as more and more Filipinos are vaccinated, this pandemic will soon be a thing of the past and there will be an influx of international travelers into our country.”

Morente, for his part, reminded the new immigration inspectors that aside from barring entry of undesirable aliens to the country, they will also be tasked to ensure that Filipinos will not be trafficked abroad.

The BI said its new batch of recruits underwent a three-month training on immigration laws, rules and procedures.

Morente said they are expecting another batch of immigration officers to complete their training before 2021 ends.
