More than 1,800 individuals or 467 families were evacuated in Mandaue City, Cebu due to heavy flooding in the area due to the heavy downpour on Friday evening.
Mayor Jonas Cortes said the displaced families are currently housed at various gymnasiums and schools in Mandaue.
They are located at barangays Paknaan Vamo, Casuntingan, Tabok, Tingub and Umapad.
The waters subsided on Saturday.
“I will call a meeting with the DRRM council to update us of the whole extent in the flood from the Butuanon River,” Cortes said.
Apart from individuals, houses were also affected.
A video that circulated online saw several shanties being carried away by the Butuanon River.
Meanwhile, Mantuyong Barangay Councilor Bryan Sanchez showed in his social media account the amount of trash barring river flow causing spillage into major highways.
“This is the because of heavy traffic,” he said.
Immediately members of the Mandaue Bureau of Fire Protection conducted a rescue on the affected residents trapped in their homes when the floods became neck-deep.
According to PAGASA, the downpour was due to the severe and intense thunderstorm as an effect of the trough of Typhoon Inday, which also affected mountain barangays in Cebu City.
Meanwhile, some five houses in Sitio Tabok, Barangay Pit-os were washed away by the flash flood.
It was also learned that the Butuanon River overflowed, which resulted in some 130 individuals evacuated evacuate when the floodwaters reached their homes.
There were also recorded incidents of landslides in Sitio Batang-Batang, Barangay Sudlon 1 and Sitio Proper Tac-an, Barangay Budlaan.
